The attack on Molo activist Richard Otieno has caused public uproar after he was brutally murdered by unknown assailants on his way home from a bar on Saturday night.

On Sunday, irate residents blocked Njoro-Molo Road with boulders and set bonfires before storming the mortuary where the deceased's body was being held and paraded it on the streets in a show of anger and rage.

The fiasco has raised many questions over what really transpired in the moments leading to his attack.

Otieno, also known as 'Molo President', was reportedly attacked using an axe by unknown assailants on Saturday night outside his home which is 200 metres away from Elbugon Police Station.

He was last seen alive and in high spirits in Elbugon where he had gone to watch a soccer game on Saturday night.

Once the game was over, like other revellers, he stepped out and took a boda boda ride to his home. On his way home, nothing alarming happened till he was dropped by the boda boda rider.

According to a source close to the activist, Otieno had just alighted from a motorcycle around midnight outside his home.

It was reported that after being dropped off in the night, he took out his phone to call his wife before unknown assailants emerged from nowhere and hacked him to death.

The robbers hit him on the buckhead with an axe which resulted in the activist's death on the spot.

"He lost his life after he was attacked by unknown assailants, they hit him on the buckhead with an axe and he died," Peter Gichuhi a resident explained.

"The assailants hit him with an axe, his buckhead has a deep cut," another resident, Anne Kadot lamented.

The source further revealed that it was not the first time the activist was attacked. Two months earlier, an attempt to murder him was made when he was hit by a blunt object on his head.

"This is not the first time. He was arrested and assaulted two months ago. Someone was after his life,” the source disclosed.

Otieno's lawyer Rosalinda Wamaitha told the press that her client was living in constant fear of being attacked and the incident that led to his death was the third time.

"This is the third time. The second time after he was hit, I went and saw him in the hospital. We want to ask the government what is the future of our young people," the lawyer stated.

Before the tragic incident, Otieno had already recorded statements about receiving threats due to his activism. He was a vocal critic of Molo MP Kuria Kimani.

Protesters after storming the morgue, took Otieno's body marching to their area MP Kimani Kuria's residence. However, Kuria Kimani has distanced himself from the attack calling on security agencies to hasten investigations.

"There should be expedient investigations and whoever is involved must and should be brought to justice," he stated adding that their difference were political, not personal.

The whereabouts of Otieno's body is not yet known which was taken away by residents when anti-riot police dispersed them.
