Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) on Tuesday arrested a 33-year-old man who kidnapped a seven-year-old boy in the Mwihoko area of Kiambu County on February 17, 2025.
According to police reports, the suspect abducted the child while he was in the company of his parents inside a supermarket in the Mwihoko area.
The arrest followed efforts by police, who had launched a search for the suspect after parents of the missing child reported the incident.
"A 33-year-old man (name withheld) has been arrested in connection with the kidnapping of a seven-year-old boy in the Mwihoko area of Kiambu County on February 17, 2025, following well-coordinated efforts by police officers and detectives based at Githurai Police Station," DCI stated in a statement.
''The ordeal began when the child’s parents, while shopping at a supermarket in Mwihoko, suddenly realized their son had vanished. Despite their frantic search, their attempts to find him proved futile.''
According to the parents, the suspect demanded a Ksh100,000 ransom from them following the incident, prompting them to report the matter to the police.
"In their moment of desperation, they received a call from an unknown individual who claimed to have their son and demanded a ransom of Sh100,000 for his safe return," DCI stated.
"Determined to bring the child home, officers sprang into action. Through forensic trails, they flushed the suspect out of his hideout in the Githurai Railway area."
Following the reports, the DCI, flanked by their counterparts from Githurai Police Station, sprang into action and managed to flush the suspect out of his hideout, where they rescued the minor.
As the family is now reunited, the suspect has been remanded in police custody, where he is currently undergoing processing as he awaits his court appearance.
In December, DCI officers arrested a suspected kidnapper in Kasarani, just a few kilometres from Githurai, for allegedly abducting an Indian man.
The incident took place on December 17, when a 28-year-old suspect, along with two accomplices, orchestrated the kidnapping.
They reportedly used a woman to lure the victim into their house before holding her captive.
