Three students from South Eastern Kenya University (SEKU) died in a road accident on Friday, February 21.
According to reports, the accident that claimed the three male students took place when the students who were on a motorcycle hit a stationary lorry at wa Vonza, Kitui County.
Reports indicate that the three were riding their motorcycle from the university to their residence when the accident occurred.
The sand truck had been parked by the roadside due to a mechanical failure, leading to the horrific collision.
According to Kwa Vonza area chief Ronald Mbuvi, all three students died on the spot.
Police officers from Kwa Vonza Police Station responded swiftly to the accident scene, launching an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Their preliminary reports suggest that poor visibility and the truck’s position may have contributed to the crash.
Following the accident, the bodies of the deceased were transported to the Kitui Hospital mortuary as authorities continued with their inquiries.
The tragic loss has left the SEKU community in mourning, with students and staff struggling to come to terms with the devastating news.
According to data from the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), the second-highest number of fatalities on the road is attributed to motorcyclists who ply these roads.
"Analysis indicates that the most affected category of road users are pedestrians at 38 per cent, followed by motorcyclists at 25 per cent," NTSA Director General George Njao stated last month.
"It is therefore imperative that all efforts are geared towards ensuring the safety of all road users. It is important that NTSA and Nairobi County deploy multi-pronged, technology-driven strategies in order to achieve a safe reliable city transport system."
