The Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union have petitioned the Senate seeking an intervention over long-standing issues.

In a letter shared by the KMPDU National Chairperson Dr Abidan Mwachi, the union outlined three concerns raised in the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), which are consistently not met.

"We write to inform you that we have officially petitioned the Senate to address longstanding issues regarding our Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA)," the doctor wrote.

Top on the list was the comprehensive implementation of the Social Health Authority (SHA) insurance and a resolution to the monthly lock-outs on the ninth of every month.

Secondly, the medics sought the Senate's intervention in the payment delays of the postgraduate fees and the failure of MHCHRAC to convene their required meetings.

The last grievance the national chair shared was the recurring delays in the posting of interns across the counties.

He concluded his message with a note that the union would be presenting these concerns before the departmental committee on health on Monday, April 14.

"This matter will be heard and determined tomorrow during the Departmental Committee on Health sitting, where we have been invited to present and prosecute our case," he stated.

"We are hopeful for a favourable resolution that will pave the way for meaningful progress. Thank you."

The petition was filed before the Senate on March 18, and those mentioned in the petition were the National Treasury, Ministry of Health, the National Assembly, and SHA.

Responding to the post by Dr Mwachi, Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, who tabled the petition in the Senate, jested that the Senate had been added to the petition by hand, unlike the other entities, which were typed in.

This comes barely a week after the KMPDU members in Nairobi called off a month-long strike after signing a return-to-work agreement with the county government.
