The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has recovered two AK-47 rifles believed to have been used in the fatal attack on three National Police Reservists (NPR) earlier this month.

In a statement issued on Saturday, April 26, the DCI said the recovery was made during a joint operation at Lemorijo village in Lengurma Location, Isiolo North Sub-County.

According to the detectives, the two AK-47 rifles, both with empty magazines, were found hidden in the area.

"Earlier today, a joint operation led by the DCI Crime Scene Investigations (CSI) team, supported by GSU Kipsing, successfully recovered two AK-47 rifles with empty magazines at Lemorijo village, Lengurma Location, Isiolo North Sub-County," the statement read.

DCI said that the operation was launched in response to the brutal attack that occurred on April 7, where three NPR officers from Igembe North, Meru County, were shot dead by armed raiders.

The three were killed, several NPR officers were injured, and their firearms were stolen during a fierce gun battle with bandits at Meru.

"The operation was in response to the brutal incident that occurred on 7th April 2025, where three National Police Reservists (NPR) from Igembe North, Meru County, were fatally shot by armed raiders. The recovered rifles are believed to have been used during the attack," DCI said.

On April 8, Meru County Commissioner Jacob Ouma confirmed the incident, saying authorities responded immediately after the attack was reported.

"We received the report of the raid in the Mea Area and responded in time. There was a fierce fight, and unfortunately, three were fatally shot," Ouma said.

The detectives added that the success of the operation was attributed to the cooperation between elite DCI teams, members of the public, the local administration and DCI officers from Igembe North.

DCI commended all officers involved in the operation, praising their dedication and commitment to maintaining security and law and order.

It noted that investigations into the identity of the attackers and the circumstances surrounding the killing of the three NPR officers are still ongoing.
