A traffic snarl-up is building up along the Nairobi-Mombasa highway after a gas tanker and a mini-truck overturned.

The gas tanker, which was carrying liquid gas, overturned near Signature Mall in Sabaki, Athi River.

Reports say the driver lost control of the vehicle, and it fell into a ditch. The tanker was heading from Mombasa to Nairobi when the accident happened.

Just about 100 metres away from the tanker crash, a mini-truck also overturned in a separate accident.

According to an eyewitness, the mini-truck may have been the first to crash, possibly causing the second accident.

The two incidents caused a heavy traffic jam on the busy highway. Traffic police from the Athi River police station arrived at the scene to help clear the road.

The current state of the drivers is unconfirmed, but no fatalities have been reported at the time of the publication of this article.

This comes a day after a tanker transporting oil crashed along the Southern Bypass at Kibera after the front tyre on the driver's side burst on April 29.

According to witnesses, the oil tanker lost control along the busy highway when the tyre burst and skidded across the road, crashing onto a roadside bank.

In the video, the extensive damage to the cab is evident, with black oil already forming a stream from the leakage.

Well-wishers at the scene were also seen helping the injured into an ambulance that arrived at the scene shortly after.

The Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) on the other hand is advising all oil transporters to understand the properties and hazards of petroleum products, be proficient in safe loading and unloading procedures to prevent spills and conduct regular inspections and maintenance of tanks and equipment.
