Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi has announced that the government will sign a memorandum of understanding with the Dominican Republic in the Caribbean to help with the repatriation of Kenyan police officers serving in Haiti.
This is after Mudavadi, who has been on a visit to the US, announced that he will head to the Dominican Republic capital, Santo Domingo, to hold talks with the leadership of the Caribbean nation between May 11 and 13.
In the MoU, injured Kenyan officers will also be allowed to have access to medical evacuation and also help with the transportation of deceased persons.
''In Santo Domingo, Mudavadi will sign MOUs on Medical evacuation, Repatriation of Injured, and Deceased Persons, Access to Dominican Territory for Kenyan Members of the Multinational Security Support Mission in Haiti,'' stated Mudavadi’s office.
Kenyan police officers deployed in Haiti have faced significant challenges accessing medical treatment in the event of injuries, as most hospitals in the gang-ridden nation have been rendered unusable.
On March 19, a Kenyan peacekeeper serving in the Multinational Security Support (MSS) mission in Haiti was rushed to the hospital after sustaining injuries during an operation.
Jack Ombaka, the MSS Spokesperson, revealed that the Kenyan officer was injured while conducting a security operation in Kenscoff, within the Belot area.
With nearly 1,000 Kenyan officers deployed to quell the gang turmoil in Haiti, at least two have been reported to have succumbed, and some have been injured.
In April 2025, officers in the mission told Reuters that two soldiers had been seriously injured as the mission was increasingly under attack.
Concerns of equipment failures have also been raised as the officers attribute the injuries to inadequate equipment.
Meanwhile, during the trip, Mudavadi will also sign an agreement between the Institute of Higher Education in Diplomatic and Consular Training of the Dominican Republic and Kenya’s Foreign Service Academy.
Additionally, in his US visit, the Prime Cabinet Secretary held talks with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who reaffirmed US support for Kenya’s leadership in the Haiti MSS and other initiatives to support regional stability and democratic governance.
