Notorious Haitian gang leader Jimmy "Barbecue" Cherizier likened himself to the United States' President Donald Trump during his latest interview with Dateline.
Barbecue, who leads the Viv Ansanm gang, told the publication that the US President was his inspiration to challenge the atrocities inflicted upon the people of Haiti.
According to Barbecue, Trump's "drain the swamp" slogan is one of his driving forces, claiming that he is seeking to reclaim Haiti despite taking over about 85 per cent of the Caribbean nation with violence.
"Donald Trump is a patriot; he loves his country. We must show that we are patriots and nationalists and do what's right for our country. I think we have something in common," the gang leader stated.
"I want to resolve the problem. I want to resolve the problem in a serious way, but the people who are in power don't want to resolve the problem. All I want is for peace."
The interview with Barbecue came just days after the United States designated his gang alliance, Viv Ansanm and several others, as terrorist organisations on May 2.
In 2024 alone, more than a million Haitians were displaced by gang violence, and more than 5,000 were killed. In the first quarter of 205, 1,600 died, according to the United Nations.
In the midst of all this were the reports of the first Kenyan police officers succumbing since they were deployed under the Multinational Support System (MSS) in June 2024.
On February 23, MSS confirmed the demise of the first Kenyan police officer to die in the mission, just months after they were deployed.
"Today, Sunday, February 23rd, 2025, one of our MSS officers from the Kenyan contingent was injured during an operation in SÉGUR - SAVIEN, in the Artibonite department. The officer was immediately airlifted to Aspen Level 2 Hospital but, unfortunately, succumbed to the injuries," the statement read.
A month later, on March 25, another Kenyan police officer was shot dead during an operation in the Lower Artibonite region, which is located 92 kilometres north of Haiti's capital, Port-au-Prince.
However, the National Police Service has yet to confirm his death, as his body has not yet been found, even though a clip went viral on social media with the police officer clearly dead.
