The government has announced the closure of a section of Ngong-Suswa road to allow for construction.
On Wednesday, May 14, the Kenya Rural Roads Authority (KeRRA) warned residents of an impending traffic disruption because of the repairs.
Through a notice, the government agency said the road will be closed between Matonyok and the junction to the Kenya Institute of Highways and Building Technology (KIHBT) to facilitate major construction works.
KeRRA said that the section of the road from the Ngere Road Junction to the junction heading to KIHBT would be closed from Monday, May 12, to Tuesday, May 20.
Also, the section of the road from Matonyok to Ngere Road Junction was to be closed from Monday, May 12, to Wednesday, June 11.
KeRRA, while providing an alternative road, noted that temporary diversions put in place had proved to be inadequate and posed safety concerns, especially during the rains.
Consequently, motorists were advised to use the Lemiso Road- Maragara Road- Kibiko route and follow the lead of traffic marshals and police who would be at hand to assist.
The latest comes amidst the major construction of the road spanning 70 kilometres that is set to provide an alternative to the busy Nairobi- Mai Mahiu road as well as other parts of the country.
The road will run across Kajiado North and Kajiado West sub-counties and will also provide an alternative route for travellers going to Narok, Bomet, Kisii, Kericho, and parts of Nyanza.
Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo on Tuesday, May 13, said the Ngong-Suswa road, currently under construction, is 90 per cent complete.
"The 70-kilometre road, which is expected to help in decongesting the Nairobi-Mai Mahiu road, is 90 per cent complete," noted Omollo, adding that the government was determined to complete the project within the set timelines
"The ongoing construction of the Ngong-Suswa Road, a 70-kilometre transport corridor cutting across Kajiado North and Kajiado West Sub-Counties, is a key investment under the government's Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA)," he added.
So far, according to the PS, the value of land along the new project has skyrocketed, and infrastructures such as petrol stations, markets, and service centres have begun to take shape.
