Traffic has built up along the busy Thika Super Highway after a road accident in the Ngara area.

Motorists attempting to access the central business district of Nairobi city have expressed difficulty navigating the highway.

This was after a matatu ferrying passengers to the CBD got involved in a road crash, leaving several passengers with injuries.

The accident is said to have occurred around 7:30am, around Guru Nanak, near the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD), after a matatu rammed into another vehicle from the rear.

The matatu caused several other vehicles trailing it to crash into one another, further complicating the situation.

A total of six cars were involved in the accident, with rescue operations underway to clear the road and ease traffic flow.

Most passengers were forced to walk, while others resorted to using motorbikes to access the CBD.

Witnesses who spoke to Kenyans.co.ke confirmed that they were forced to spend an average of 30 to 45 minutes stuck on the road.

On Tuesday, another multiple-vehicle crash occurred along the same stretch after a 14-seater matatu rammed into a Metro Sacco matatu, leaving several people injured.

Meanwhile, four people died and several others were injured in a tragic road accident after a private car rammed into a stalled trailer at Membley in Ruiru, near Kenyatta University Referral Hospital along Thika Road, on April 19.

The accident, which occurred at around 2:30am, was reportedly caused by overspeeding, leaving the driver with little time to react before hitting the trailer.

Poor visibility due to non-functional street lights, coupled with the trailer driver’s alleged failure to place a warning triangle, also contributed to the grisly crash that left the car mangled beyond recognition.

Thika Road stands out, accounting for 11.3 per cent of all recorded accidents, more than double the rate of several other major roads. According to the NTSA, the high frequency of crashes is likely driven by a combination of heavy traffic flow, high-speed driving, and infrastructural shortcomings.
