Six people died on the spot while 20 others suffered severe injuries after a fire incident occurred on Saturday morning, May 24, in Makina, Kibera.
While confirming the fire, area MP Peter Orero revealed that it occurred behind Kambi along the route to Eagles, affecting over 40 households and plunging the community into deep mourning and loss of property.
Among the injured are one man, two women, and three children, all of whom have been rushed to the hospital for emergency treatment.
“This is a heartbreaking moment for all of us in Kibra. We mourn with the families who have lost their loved ones and are committed to supporting them through this difficult time,” Orero said in an official statement.

The cause of the fire remains unknown, but the MP has assured residents that investigations are ongoing to find out what happened. He assured the residents that the county will implement long-term safety measures to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
“We are also working closely with relevant officials to investigate the cause of the fire and put in place long-term safety measures. Let us stand together as a community in compassion, in support, and solidarity,” the MP assured.

Reports indicated that the five victims comprised three adults and two children, while four of the injured remained in critical condition.
It also comes after another fire in Rongo Town, Migori County, that happened on Friday night. Although no casualties were reported,
business owners were left counting losses after properties were reduced to ashes.
Following the recurrent fire incidents across the country, calls for improved emergency response, stricter safety regulations, and enhanced public awareness have intensified.
