Pressure continues to mount over the circumstances surrounding the alleged abduction of Juja MP George Koimburi after detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) on Tuesday arrested a key ally of the lawmaker believed to have masterminded the incident.
The ally was apprehended following reports that his Subaru vehicle was allegedly used in the MP's reported abduction on Sunday while he attended a church event.
Police Spokesperson Michael Muchiri confirmed the developments, noting that investigations are ongoing to verify the MP's and his allies' claims regarding the ordeal.
Separately, police also investigated a farm in Ruiru, Kiambu County, owned by businessman and politician Jimmy Wanjigi, following allegations that it was where Koimburi had been dumped after his disappearance.
Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja stated that an analysis of the farm produced conflicting reports. A site visit by police revealed notable inconsistencies between the vegetation and road patterns seen in a viral video and those found at Wanjigi’s property.
"Police officers from Juja swiftly responded, visiting the alleged scene and thoroughly documenting the area. Upon comparing the vegetation and road dimensions at the scene with those in the video, it was established that the two did not match," read a statement from the National Police Service (NPS) on Tuesday, May 27.
The Juja MP is currently recuperating at Karen Hospital, with opposition leaders led by Rigathi Gachagua claiming the MP had been subdued by a chemical which rendered him unable to speak.
Meanwhile, Kanja confirmed that the police were denied access to the hospital where the MP was admitted, which hindered their investigations.
Additionally, National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang'ula called for a parliamentary inquiry into the alleged forced disappearance of the lawmaker.
Speaking on Tuesday, May 27, during parliamentary proceedings, Wetang'ula confirmed that Koimburi was found in a coffee plantation, despite conflicting reports from the police.
"I have this morning instructed the Chair of the Departmental Committee on Administration and Internal Security to liaise with the Inspector General of Police and relevant security agencies to provide preliminary findings to the House," he said.
At the same time, Wetang'ula noted that the lawmaker’s family had instructed the hospital to deny access to all visitors, including detectives from the DCI.
