ChatGPT Down: OpenAI's Chatbot Experiences Global Outage

Users of the popular AI chatbot ChatGPT have reported a global outage, revealing that they have been receiving different error messages when attempting to use the service.

A spot check has shown messages such as "Error in message stream", "too many concurrent requests", and "Hmm...something seems to have gone wrong" as just a few of the most popular responses being received by users after prompting the chatbot.

OpenAI, the chatbot's developer, has also seemingly been made aware of the outage in its services, relaying a message on its status page that the error that it had received several reports of latency.

"Some users are experiencing elevated error rates and latency across listed services. We are investigating," the statement read.

Besides ChatGPT, other services by the developer, including APIs and the video creation chatbot Sora, have also seemingly been experiencing similar problems for hours now.

In a subsequent update, OpenAI noted that the outage was causing degraded performance and the investigation was still ongoing on all the listed services.

The outage has been reported across the world, including in India, where 85 per cent of users have reported a downtime and in the United States and the United Kingdom, with more than 1000 users reporting problems using ChatGPT.

DownDetector, a website that tracks spikes in user problems, has also reported problems related to the chatbot, both on the website and on the app.

According to the Times of India, around 90 per cent of the reported delays are for users accessing the chatbot via its website, while the other 10 per cent are those using the app.

For users who have grown to depend on the chatbot for not only their personal life but also professionally, this outage has elicited a series of memes and breakdowns on social media, especially on X.

Corporate employees have especially suffered the brunt, with one X user posting, "Chatgpt being down is so… how am I supposed to answer my work emails?"

A developer who has seemingly utilised the chatbot to code wrote, "ChatGPT is down now, I'm just a full-stack developer that doesn't even know how to write HTML."

A series of memes has also been launched on several social media platforms as a result, highlighting the growing over-dependence of AI across the world.
