According to the notice, among the items to be auctioned are 19 cows, 10 donkeys, 4 German Shepherd dogs, 3 used tyres, and a Toyota Hilux vehicle, and prices will vary depending on the item.

Bulls and bull calves will be sold between Ksh7,000 and Ksh70,000 each. German Shepherd dogs will also go for Ksh40,000 each.

Donkeys will be sold between Ksh6,000 and Ksh 15,000. Used tyres will cost Ksh12,000 while the Toyota Hilux will be sold for Ksh350,000.

Moi University is one of the public universities experiencing financial challenges over the past years. The institution has also laid off over 376 staff members due to financial difficulties.

Members of Parliament on June 17 questioned the university officials over a huge debt of Ksh8.8 billion and how the institution is working on clearing the debts.

The MPs, after their review, revealed that the institution was spending more than it could afford due to decreased student admissions and a rising wage bill

Kiplagat explained to the MPs that the Ksh8.8 billion debt includes unpaid staff loans, unremitted statutory deductions, and debts to suppliers.

“The Committee is deeply concerned about the livelihoods of the affected staff. We want assurance that the university is not using redundancy to avoid paying its debts,” Tinderet MP Julius Melly said.
