Police officers on Wednesday morning erected roadblocks along major roads leading to Nairobi's Central Business District (CBD) as part of efforts to contain the day’s planned protests.

Among the key roads affected were Jogoo Road, Ngong Road, Limuru Road, Kiambu Road, and Mombasa Road, where officers set up barricades to carry out impromptu checks.

Along Jogoo Road, a roadblock was mounted near City Stadium, while another was spotted near Jomo Kenyatta International Airport on Mombasa Road.

On Limuru Road, officers placed a roadblock near the Embassy of Israel, while another was positioned near Runda Mall along Kiambu Road.

Additionally, transport was paralysed along Ngong Road near the City Mortuary roundabout, as a contingent of police officers temporarily stopped motorists.

Those heading into Nairobi were forced to alight from vehicles and undergo rigorous security checks, with drivers instructed to produce the requisite documents.

The checks are believed to be part of the government’s efforts to manage the protests, which are being held to mark one year since the anti-Finance Bill demonstrations that led to the deaths of several young Kenyans.

To further enhance security near the Nairobi CBD, hundreds of anti-riot police officers were deployed around Parliament Buildings, with footage showing police water cannons stationed in front of Bunge Towers.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen was also spotted on Wednesday morning walking through the city centre as he made his way to his office at Harambee House.

Commenting on the matter, Murkomen assured Kenyans of the government's commitment to safeguarding them and their businesses. He also commended the police for their security efforts.

“We have a nation to keep and build. On my way to work this morning, I met so many Kenyans who were up early and making their way to their daily hustles,” Murkomen said.

He added, “We shall do everything to protect everyone and their livelihoods. I appreciate all our men and women in uniform who keep us all safe and secure.”
