Security officers assigned to Former Chief Justice David Maraga have been withdrawn just days after he joined protesters on the streets in Nairobi city centre on June 25, 2025.

Addressing the issue in a formal letter to the Inspector General of Police and the Ministry of Interior and National Administration, dated June 27, Maraga said that the withdrawal of his security is tied to his public criticism of the country's police leadership.

He stated that one of his bodyguards was asked not to report to duty on June 25 but instead go on a routine entry in the firearm register.

"On June 25, the day I joined the youth and families of the victims who died and those who went missing from the events of a year ago, one of the officers attached to me was asked not to report for duty but instead go and make a routine monthly entry in the firearm register," he stated.

Maraga added that he was on June 26, informed that other security officers attached to him were asked to report back to their stations.

"On arrival that morning, he was suddenly informed of a training that was to take place on the same day. The following day, on June 26, I was informed that the rest of the security officers had been asked to report to their stations, without any further information," the letter reads.

He added that he remains entitled to security arrangements and other support from the National Police Service as part of a Chief Justice's retirement benefits.

Maraga said that since his retirement in January 2021, he has been having the service of armed security as per the provisions of the Act.

"Under the Act, the Retired Chief Justice is entitled to police security and drivers who are to be provided upon request by the retired Chief Justice," he added.

He urged the authorities to restore his security with immediate effect. He also questioned how police handle controversial circumstances in the country, and urged the Interior ministry to look into the matter.

"It is on this basis that I demand the immediate restoration of my security," he wrote.

Maraga is not the only leader who attended the protest whose security has been withdrawn.

On June 26, Embakasi East MP, Babu Owino, announced that his security was withdrawn after he took part in the June 25 protest.
