The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has announced a temporary traffic disruption at the Gitaru Interchange, which connects Waiyaki Way with the Southern and Western Bypasses.
KeNHA Director General Kung'u Ndung'u on Friday evening said the disruption was due to the closure of the Southwestern Loop to Southern Bypass at the intersection of Waiyaki Way and Western Bypass.
He added that the closure of the loop was to allow for scheduled roadworks for the reconstruction of the South-Western Interchange Ramp and slip roads.
The KeNHA boss, in his announcement, said the section of the highway would be closed for 45 days from June 28, 2025, to August 11, this year.
To avoid inconveniences, motorists who plan to use the section of the road were urged to use alternative routes, including the Kikuyu link road at the Sigora Gold Club junction.
According to KeNHA, the Kikuyu-Link route is meant for motorists coming from the Waiyaki Way and heading to the Southern Bypass.
Alternatively, those coming from Nakuru and heading towards the Southern Bypass were urged to use the newly constructed Southern loop and proceed to the Southern Bypass using a diversion constructed at the median of the Southern Bypass.
Additionally, vehicles from coming Western Bypass to Waiyaki Way were directed to use the Muguku Interchange and join the Kikuyu link road at Sigona Golf Legend Club junction.
KeNHA further advised motorists to follow the designated traffic plan, adhere to project road signs, and cooperate with police and traffic marshals on site.
It is not the first time the Authority has closed the said road for maintenance works. Last year, KeNHA temporarily disrupted traffic flow along the route for one month, between November 19 and December 19.
In an announcement on November 15, Kung'u Ndung'u said the disruption was to allow for the construction of the Right-Hand Side (RHS) carriageway between the Southern and Western Bypass.
He said that once the maintenance works were complete, the project would improve connectivity, enhance road safety, and support the economic growth of Nairobi and surrounding areas.
