Githunguri Member of Parliament Gathoni Wamuchomba appears to have endorsed Fred Matiang’i to be the next president.

Wamuchomba, a known ally of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, was alongside Matiang’i and other dignitaries at the PCEA Thika Town Church in Kiambu County on Sunday, June 29, when she made the remarks.

During the church service, the vocal lawmaker openly advocated for Matiang’i in the former CS's presence, as she declared he would become the next Head of State.

"Because I have foresight, I know that here we have the next president of the Republic of Kenya," Wamuchomba said amid applause from the congregation.

Wamuchomba reiterated her sentiments during engagements with the media outside the church premises, where she consistently referred to Matiang’i as 'his excellency.'

While referencing the latest wave of conflict between the government and the so-called Gen-Z, Wamuchomba said, "As His Excellency has said, it is time for dialogue. Guns, teargas and accusations are not going to give us a solution. Dialogue will. The government of the day must seek to have a dialogue with the young people of Kenya."

After the church service, Wamuchomba joined Matiang’i and other MCAs for lunch, and the leaders interacted with locals in Thika Town.

Incidentally, also in the midst of the opposition outfit was Gloria Orwoba, who was recently expelled from the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party.

Wamuchomba's endorsement of Matiang’i to become the next president was interesting for several reasons. For one, Matiang’i is part of the opposition outfit comprising leaders, including Gachagua, Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka and People's Liberation Party (PLP) leader Martha Karua -  all of whom have openly expressed interest in running for presidency.

While Gachagua has consistently maintained that the opposition outfit would not fall out despite their presidential ambitions, the leaders are yet to announce who they will front to rival President William Ruto in the 2027 elections.

Many expected Wamuchomba to back Gachagua, particularly because she has openly defended the former DP on several occasions in the past. However, following Sunday’s comments, Wamuchomba appears to have clarified her stance.

On Sunday, Gachagua was in Laikipia West in Laikipia County, where he attended a church service and interacted with residents of Muhotetu, where he typically criticised the government, particularly in the aftermath of the June 2025 protests.
