The Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) has issued a notice to passengers planning to head to the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) and Wilson Airport, warning them of potential disruptions to their flights if they do not heed their advisory.
Through a statement released on Saturday, July 5, KAA noted that major roads leading to JKIA and Wilson Airport would be closed from today, 10 pm, till Sunday, July 6, in the mid-afternoon.
Roads affected include the Nairobi Expressway, Mombasa Road, Uhuru Highway, Waiyaki Way, and Kenyatta Avenue. The closure was occasioned by the Nairobi Marathon that is scheduled for Sunday, July 6.
In the notice, KAA strongly advised passengers to plan their travel early to avoid delays and ensure timely arrival for their flights.
“Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) wishes to inform all passengers and airport users that due to the Nairobi City Marathon scheduled for Sunday, July 6, 2025, several key roads leading to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) and Wilson Airport will be closed starting from 10:00 PM on Saturday, July 5, until mid-afternoon on Sunday, July 6,” KAA stated.
“Passengers are strongly advised to plan their travel early to avoid delays and ensure timely arrival for their flights,” the Authority added.
While issuing the caution, KAA stated that the road closure would likely lead to heavy traffic and diversions, and urged passengers to factor in extra travel time.
In addition, KAA advised the passengers to use the Outer Ring Road via Ruai or Thika Road, depending on their direction of approach to access JKIA. Passengers heading to Wilson were advised to use feeder roads along Lang’ata Road and Mombasa Road to access the airport.
In the list of roads to be closed, the Nairobi Expressway will be the most affected, as it will be closed from James Gichuru to the JKIA in both directions. This closure will take effect from 10pm on Saturday until Sunday at 3pm.
Restrictions on Waiyaki Way would see the inner lanes between Musa Gitau Road and the Expressway entrance set to be closed from midnight to 10 am on Sunday.
In addition, two lanes on both sides between James Gichuru Road and the entrance to the Expressway will also be inaccessible from midnight to 2 pm on Sunday.
Aerodrome Road, located in the Upper Hill area near Nyayo Stadium, will also be closed off for a relatively longer period. According to the Nairobi City Marathon's official communication, the road will be closed from Friday, July 4, at 10 pm until Sunday at 6 pm.
Major access points along Mombasa Road and the Southern bypass, including roundabouts, exits and entries towards town, will also remain closed from midnight on Saturday to 11 am on Sunday.
In the Nairobi CBD, several streets will be completely shut off from midnight on Saturday to 2 pm on Sunday, including Harry Thuku Road, University Way, and Koinange Street (between University Way and Kenyatta Avenue).
Others include Kenyatta Avenue, Kimathi Street, Simba Street, Mama Ngina Street (between Simba and Kimathi), City Hall Way (from Simba to Parliament Road), Taifa Road, Harambee Avenue (from Taifa to Parliament Road), and Parliament Road (between Harambee Avenue and Haile Selassie Avenue).
Restrictions will also be applied at key highway intersections. More notably, crossing points on Mombasa Road and the Southern bypass via Likoni Road will be closed from midnight to 11 am on Sunday. Intersections linking the expressway and the bypass are the ones which will be most affected.
On Thika Road, exit A2 toward Uhuru Highway as one is heading towards Mombasa Road, will also be closed for the marathon from midnight to 2 pm.
