The Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) has advised students who have applied for loans to check for receipts following the disbursement of Ksh9.46 billion.

In a statement on Tuesday August 19, the board urged students to check their portals to confirm receipt of the funds.

"Students are advised to check their HELB portals to confirm receipt of the funds and to access detailed information regarding their individual HELB loan accounts," he stated.

The Ksh9.46 billion has been divided to cover Ksh5.76 billion of tuition fees and Ksh3.7 billion of student living costs. According to the board, so far, a total of 309,178 students have received loans.

"We are pleased to notify parents, guardians and university students that the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) has, as of today, disbursed a total of Ksh9.46 billion in financial support to 309,178 university students," the statement read in part.

"This amount comprises Ksh5.76 billion for tuition fees and Ksh3.7 billion for student upkeep."

Although the disbursements have already begun, the board encouraged students who have yet to apply to keep doing so.

So far, applications for both first-time and continuing loans for universities and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutes have hit 961,023  as of August 18.

Undergraduate applicants are 660,560, while TVET applicants are fewer at 300,463.

"The Government will continue to provide the requisite funding to ensure that higher education remains accessible and affordable
and that no student is left behind on account of financial limitations," the statement read.

Those still looking to apply for the loan can do so until August 31, when the application window will close.

First-time students can apply for the loan by visiting the HELB official website, www.hef.co.ke, while continuing students can use the HELB mobile app or dial *642#.
