Nurses looking to be posted soon for their internship programmes will have to wait a bit longer after Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale announced that the ministry would be withdrawing the list.
Speaking at Citizen TV on Wednesday night, Duale claimed that the whole nursing internship list would be audited after at least 19 names of students who had not completed their studies were found on the list.
The CS revealed that he had met with the National Council of Nurses (NCK) earlier in the day when the discrepancies were spotted, necessitating the bold step.
He further warned that any persons or institutions found liable for including the said names on the list would face the necessary consequences.
"This morning I had a meeting with the CEO, and we found out about a number of anomalies of about 19 nurses who have not completed but have been given posting letters," he stated.
"We are withdrawing and auditing the whole list of nursing, and all the people responsible and the training institutions will have necessary action."
This is just the latest controversy to plague the health ministry since it announced the posting of over 6,000 medical interns on June 27.
"The Ministry of Health, in fulfilment of its commitment to ensure the timely deployment of interns by 1st July 2025, is pleased to announce the official posting of 6,484 healthcare interns under the 2025/2026 Internship Cohort," a statement by the ministry read in part.
Of the 6,484 positions, nurses with a bachelor's degree received the largest stake, with 2,098 interns being dedicated to them. This list is now expected to be audited following the latest directive.
Following the announcement of the posting, reports soon broke that the intern doctors had received letters showing a monthly salary of Ksh46,120.
The public uproar that followed forced the ministry to clarify that the Ksh 46,120 was just the basic salaries, and once the allowances under CSG 9 / Job Group L are added, the total monthly pay comes to about Ksh 208,000.
It clarified that the bulk pay would range between Ksh180,000 and Ksh208,000, depending on where one was posted.
