A protest by Nairobi City County workers erupted at City Hall on Wednesday, August 6, as they demanded the immediate payment of their delayed salaries.
The demonstration escalated into a physical standoff, with the workers blocking the entry and exit of vehicles belonging to senior county officials, effectively bringing the premises to a standstill.
The protest was spearheaded by union leaders Festus Ngare and Calvin Okello, the Secretary General and City Branch Secretary, respectively, of the Kenya County Government Workers Union.
The leaders expressed the workers' frustration over what they termed a consistent failure by the county administration to honour their financial obligations, forcing employees to struggle with basic household expenses.
A video seen by kenyans.co.ke captured the tense confrontation, showing dozens of workers surrounding county vehicles to prevent them from leaving City Hall's compound.
The protesters were heard chanting slogans and refusing to move, highlighting the workers' desperation and the growing defiance in their demand for payment.
The demonstration is the latest in a series of similar protests by county workers, who have long accused the Nairobi County Government of failing to implement collective bargaining agreements and honour payment schedules.
The county administration has yet to issue an official statement regarding a timeline for paying the salary arrears.
This incident marks a significant increase in the ongoing dispute between the county government and its workers.
This is not the first time the workers have protested. On September 24, they took to the streets over a salary increase dispute.
On the issue of promotions and redesignation, the county official assured them that the County Public Service Board has already created a schedule for it.
This strike was later called off after the county agreed to address the issue of non-payment of allowances, imprest, per diem, overtime, and medical refunds.
