Several people are feared dead after a matatu and a lorry were involved in a head-on collision at the Korompoi area on Namanga Road in Kajiado County on Saturday, August 9.
According to authorities, at least seven people were killed in the crash on the Isinya-Namanga highway.
An image obtained by Kenyans.co.ke showed that the front of the matatu, belonging to Nailepu Sacco, was destroyed.
Unlike the matatu, the lorry sustained relatively minor damage.
The passengers who died were taken to a nearby mortuary, while the injured were rushed to a local hospital for treatment.
The exact number of people injured in the accident is yet to be established.
A rescue team arrived at the scene and began the challenging task of freeing those trapped inside the wreckage.
This incident adds to the number of road accidents witnessed in the country over the past month. It comes just hours after a separate bus accident at the Coptic Roundabout on the Kisumu-Kakamega Road left 25 people dead and several others injured.
Nyanza Regional Traffic Commander Peter Maina confirmed the Kisumu accident, stating that the casualties were believed to be mourners returning from a funeral on Friday, August 8.
In addition to the fatalities, it is believed that five others are in critical condition, while 15 are nursing injuries. The bus was reportedly coming from a burial in Nyahera, Kisumu County.
On August 9, the NTSA Director General stated that the authority has dispatched a road safety team to investigate the cause of the crash.
"To aid investigations into the cause of the crash, the Authority has dispatched a team of road safety auditors to the scene. We will provide more information as the investigations commence," the NTSA statement read.
