The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has revealed plans to expand its APIs to the Electronic Tax Invoice Management System (eTIMS) and enhanced VAT compliance tools, which will further streamline tax compliance processes.
The revelation was made on Wednesday, August 13, during the second API masterclass edition, which is part of the Authority’s push to digitise revenue collection services.
The masterclass brought together the tech developer community for the co-creation of simplified service solutions as part of KRA's larger digital transformation agenda.
Through the GavaConnect Enterprise API platform, KRA has created a secure and structured way for developers and tech ecosystems to access KRA tax data programmatically. This empowers them to build applications that simplify interactions with tax services.
“The GavaConnect Enterprise API platform has exposed 16 APIs and registered over 1000 developers, reflecting a strong industry interest in tax-tech innovation,” noted Grace Wandera, Deputy Commissioner, Citizen Relations & Communication, in a press statement.
Key features of the platform include tools for PIN verification, Tax Compliance Certificate checks, NIL Return submissions, and e-Slip verification, all aimed at improving the taxpayer experience and compliance.
During the masterclass, Annastacia Githuba, KRA’s Deputy Commissioner for Program Delivery & Client Engagement, described GavaConnect as a significant milestone in Kenya’s tax digitisation efforts.
She emphasised the importance of involving developers, innovators, and private sector partners in creating solutions that facilitate easier, quicker, and more accessible tax compliance.
Githuba stated, "Today signifies a pivotal moment for KRA as we engage with the wider tech community, opening government services to integration into innovative solutions. This initiative transcends mere tax collection; it presents developers opportunities to innovate and monetise around our products, enhancing services from the ground up."
The masterclass featured API vision briefings, demonstrations, and interactive feedback sessions, inviting developers of all experience levels to contribute their insights and suggest future API features.
GavaConnect Enterprise API platform was officially unveiled at Taxpayers Day held at State House, Nairobi, last year as part of KRA’s Ninth Corporate Plan.
KRA has been tinkering with its systems to provide a seamless experience for taxpayers as it continues to find more ways to increase the country’s revenue basket.
