Public Service Cabinet Secretary Geoffrey Ruku has announced the government’s plan to launch an online platform to monitor activities of public servants before the end of the year.
Speaking on Monday evening during an interview on KTN, the CS revealed that the piloting of the new digital system would begin in October.
According to Ruku, the government has already hired a team of digital specialists to develop the system, which will be tested by the end of October to determine whether it meets the threshold.
He added that once the system passes the test, the Ministry would forward it to the Cabinet for discussion and approval.
Ruku explained that the new system would help track employee attendance, including absenteeism, meetings, sick leave, and annual leave.
“As a government, we still do not have a platform that shows the exact number of employees in agencies, ministries, and state departments who are on leave at any given time,” he said.
“We have a team working on developing a digital application, and we want to test it by the end of October to see whether it meets the needs,” Ruku added.
The CS further disclosed that the new digital system will also help curb the entrenched graft within the public sector, including the eradication of ghost workers.
“If you are not accountable for what you do on a day-to-day basis, this platform will catch up with you before the end of this year. We have to be accountable to the people of Kenya,” Ruku stated.
During the interview, the CS also emphasised the need for all public servants to keep time when arriving at their workstations, adding that the government would not relent in pushing for accountability.
According to Ruku, he would continue pushing public servants within all ministries, commissions, and parastatals to ensure that members of the public receive timely services without bias.
"We have to push the public servants to be at their work stations at the right time. The people of Kenya must see that those who are in charge are pushing the people who are supposed to work in the right direction," the CS reiterated.
