The Nairobi County has announced a crackdown targeting all landlords and tenants facilitating unlawful waste dumping in Eastleigh.
In a statement on his official X account on Tuesday, September 2, Mosiria claimed that the crackdown, which will be similar to the one conducted in Pipeline Estate, will last for the next two weeks.
According to Mosiria, his department will apprehend tenants and landlords who dump their waste unlawfully and take legal action against them.
Furthermore, Mosiria said that his department has also kick-started a crackdown targeting all business premises, especially hotels and shopping malls that are dumping their waste along the roads and in the water drainage systems.
"We are going to be in Eastleigh for the next two weeks, and we will go for all landlords and tenants who are not paying for waste management services and practising unlawful dumping, which is creating an unsightly environment; we shall apprehend all the landlords and the tenants," Mosiria said.
"Some businesspeople, especially from hotels, are dumping their waste along roads and in stormwater drainage systems, so we will also launch an operation to apprehend and take legal action against such individuals," he added.
According to Mosiria, the failure of some tenants and landlords in Eastleigh to pay for waste management services has undermined the county government's ability to provide waste management services in the area and also pay private contractors who assist in managing waste across the county.
The announcement comes five days after Mosiria also announced that his department has issued a seven-day notice to all landlords and traders in Githurai 44 who are disposing of raw sewage in open areas.
In a statement on Thursday, August 28, Mosiria claimed that the county government will begin the apprehension of all traders who have not complied with the directive by then.
Mosiria further issued vacation notices to all vendors who have erected structures on drainage systems.
"Today, together with our Environmental Officer in Githurai 44, Roysambu Constituency, and joined by the area MCA, we responded to the deteriorating state of the environment in the area," Mosiria said.
"Raw sewage and waste were flowing openly, while drainage systems had been completely blocked by vendors who had erected unlawful structures on them. It is also unfortunate that some landlords have directed their sewer lines into the open drainage system," he added.
