Several people were injured on Tuesday afternoon following an accident involving multiple vehicles in the Chepsir area along the Kericho-Nakuru highway.
According to witnesses, the accident occurred after a lorry lost control and rammed into an oncoming bus before crashing into other vehicles.
Besides the bus and the lorry, other vehicles involved in the accident included a personal car and a trailer that veered off the road as both attempted to avoid a collision.
Following the crash, the area residents rushed to the scene and began rescuing those who had been trapped in wreckages.
An unknown number of people sustained injuries of varied degrees. The victims were rushed to nearby hospitals in Nakuru and Kericho.
Videos and images widely shared online showed the lorry severely damaged with a broken windscreen and side mirrors. A similar situation was witnessed with the bus, which also sustained extensive damage on the front.
Traffic police officers from Kericho arrived at the scene moments later, cordoned the area for preliminary investigations before the vehicles involved in the accident were towed off.
The accident resulted in a huge traffic snarl-up along the busy highway, with motorists forced to seek alternative routes to evade the worsening gridlock.
The latest development comes on the back of surging cases of road crashes across the country. Just five days ago, several passengers sustained injuries after a bus overturned along the Thika Superhighway.
The accident, which occurred on Tuesday, August 26, took place after a bus ferrying about 40 passengers lost control and overturned, blocking the entire road.
The accident occurred just past Safari Park Hotel as the bus was heading to Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD).
Footage obtained by Kenyans.co.ke showed passengers being assisted to exit the bus.
