Traffic on the Southern Bypass was severely disrupted on Thursday morning, September 4 following an accident involving a lorry and a private car.
According to reports, the lorry lost control as it climbed onto the central reservation of the dual carriageway and rolled over.
The lorry rolled onto its side and fell on top of a private car. The incident caused major gridlock as it blocked most of the road.
An image obtained by Kenyans.co.ke shows the lorry resting on top of the car.
The incident caused a massive traffic jam that brought the Southern Bypass to a standstill just before the Kibra area.
According to reports, the jam began at the Blue House Corner and stretched all the way to Karen.
Motorists expressed concern, as some complained that they were stuck in the traffic for more than two hours, a type of congestion that is unusual for the area.
"It is not getting any better, even after 2 hrs. Avoid that road," Henry Mutonga, a motorist, shared online.
There were no confirmed casualties at the time of publishing. However, a response team was already at the scene, working to restore the flow of traffic.
Motorists were urged to use alternative routes to avoid being caught in the jam.
Traffic disruptions have been rampant in the country lately. This incident occurred just hours after motorists on the busy Nairobi-Nakuru highway were left stranded for hours due to a massive traffic jam caused by a sinkhole at the Eveready Roundabout in Nakuru City.
In response to that earlier situation, the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) issued a statement assuring motorists that the situation had been resolved. This came after they covered a large sinkhole that had caused the traffic disruption.
