The Kenya Veterinary Board (KVB) has announced that it will conduct a compliance assessment on veterinary practitioners in seven counties this month.

In a notice on Monday, September 8, the Board said that it will send two teams to survey the counties. The board has, however, not specified the exact dates the exercise will start or end.

According to KVB, the first team will be dispatched to assess veterinary practitioners in Turkana, West Pokot, and Trans Nzoia counties, while the second team will be dispatched to Nandi, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet, and Baringo counties.

Veterinary practitioners in these counties will be required to display a valid 2025 practice licence, retention card, and a Veterinary Medicines Directorate (VMD) licence once the officers from the board visit their premises.

Additionally, the practitioners will be required to show a lockable cabinet for prescription-only medicines and a prescription file during the exercise.

"The Kenya Veterinary Board will conduct a veterinary practice assessment in the month of September  2025 in seven counties," the board stated.

"All practitioners are requested to comply in time to avoid any inconvenience. All payments are done through eCitizen, as provided in detail on our website. For more information, kindly reach out through any of the channels below," it stated.

The announcement comes four months after the Board cautioned Kenyans against the employment of unlicensed veterinary doctors, noting that the employment of such individuals contravenes the law.

The Board noted that the public should only employ government-registered and licensed practitioners to avoid legal repercussions.

In a statement on Tuesday, April 22, the board noted that Kenyans caught employing unlicensed veterinary practitioners will be liable to a fine not exceeding Ksh100,000 or to imprisonment for at least one year, or both.

KVB noted that any individual whose name does not appear in the relevant register after March 31 every year will be deemed to be unregistered.

"No person shall practice or hold himself out, whether directly or indirectly, as practising or being able to practise as a veterinary surgeon or veterinary paraprofessional or to take up employment as such unless he is registered and licensed," the board stated.
