The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Renson Ingonga, has revealed that a national of Côte d'Ivoire wanted in the United States for conspiring to smuggle firearms into the US has been extradited from the country.

Ingonga confirmed that the suspect was successfully extradited to the US on Thursday, September 25, after he received a formal request from the United States for the suspect's extradition on Thursday, July 24.

Ingonga said that the suspect, together with another accomplice, conspired between October and November 2018 to illegally purchase firearms in the U.S. and export them to Côte d’Ivoire.

"[The man], who had been indicted by a Grand Jury in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Ohio, Eastern Division, on 28th of May 2025, was repatriated to the United States on 25th of September 2025, following extradition proceedings in Kenya," Ingonga stated.

"According to court records, [the man] and his accomplices conspired between October and November 2018 to purchase firearms in the U.S., primarily in the States of Ohio and Maryland, with the intention of illegally exporting them to Côte d’Ivoire," he added.

DPP confirmed that the suspect had been indicted by a Grand Jury in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Ohio, Eastern Division, on May 28.

The United States Government then issued an Interpol Red Notice against him and his accomplice, listing him as a fugitive wanted for prosecution.

According to Ingonga, the Nairobi Chief Magistrate's Court then kick-started an extradition proceeding of the suspect on July 25, and later issued extradition orders on September 3, which paved the way for his handover to the US authorities.

"The case was prosecuted by Mr. Vincent Monda, Mr. Allen Mulama, Mr. Duncan Ondimu, Ms. Magdalene Nduati, and Ms. Fatma Shaban. This extradition underscores Kenya’s commitment to honouring international legal obligations and strengthening cooperation with global partners in the fight against transnational crime," DPP stated.

The announcement comes a week after  DPP confirmed that he would initiate extradition proceedings against a British soldier who was accused of killing a Kenyan Woman, Agnes Wanjiru, in 2012 in Nanyuki.

The decision came after the High Court, on Tuesday, 16 September, issued an arrest warrant for the soldier, who is believed to be in the UK.

The arrest warrant was issued after the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) informed the court that the suspect had been formally charged with murder but failed to attend court.

If successful, the soldier will become the first British serviceman to be extradited to a foreign country for the murder of a civilian. Muteti slated the mention of the case on October 21, 2025, to confirm compliance.
