A Chuka University student, John Tingoi, has received recognition after beating nearly 89,000 contestants worldwide to make it to the global finals of the International Quant Championship (IQC) 2025.
The International Quant Championship (IQC) 2025 is a global, team-based quantitative finance modelling competition that has been on course for 7 months since March this year.
In the competition, the participants who are placed in groups have the chance to apply their quantitative analysis in data and financial markets competitions and accumulate points.
Basically, Quants use maths, coding and statistics to predict how financial markets will behave, build models that guide banks and hedge funds and manage risks.
The rising talent from Chuka University's Faculty of Science and Technology clinched victory to earn a spot in the finals after beating over 9,000 participants in Kenya and nearly 80,000 worldwide.
While commending Tingoi for the win, the University's administration termed the win a landmark achievement that cements the institution's reputation in science, technology, and innovation.
"Chuka University is in the global spotlight after John Tingoi, a rising talent from the Faculty of Science and Technology, clinched victory at the Kenya National Finals of the International Quant Championship (IQC) 2025," the institution announced.
"This landmark achievement cements the University’s reputation in science, technology, and innovation, as the institution celebrates one of its brightest minds flying the national and university flag globally," it added.
Following the win, Tingoi will fly to the Singapore International Quant Championship Finals after being shortlisted among the 12 best globally.
He will represent Kenya in the competitions slated for September 29 and September 30.
As per the competition guidelines, the best participants will be eligible for cash prizes at each stage of the competition and also be considered for employment opportunities.
While regional and national winners receive Ksh390,000 ($3000), international winners receive up to Ksh2.6 million ($20,000). The runners-up in the international competition receive Ksh1.5 million ($12,000) while the second runners-up receive Ksh1 million ($8000).
