Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua has renewed his grudge with Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja, blasting the police boss for bias in the handling of goon incidents.
Gachagua, in yet another scathing statement on Monday, December 1, appeared to respond to the chaos that was witnessed during the Thanksgiving ceremony for the newly elected Kariobangi North Member of County Assembly, David Warui, a day earlier, where it was alleged that a teargas canister was hurled into the premises where the former Deputy President was present.
"Mr Kanja, the matter in your hands is not much about the goons but your police command; you have surrendered this to politicians close to the President," Gachagua alleged.
In the wake of the incident, President William Ruto spoke in Embakasi on Monday, December 1, where he revealed he had issued firm instructions to IG Kanja to bring all suspects to book.
"Those who are being used to cause chaos, we cannot allow this to happen, and I have already directed the Inspector General of Police to take action against them.
The NPS also confirmed it had launched a full-scale investigation into the violent confrontation, which disrupted the church service, where several people were left nursing injuries.
The police, through Spokesperson Michael Muchiri, claimed they were forced to respond to two warring groups to prevent further escalation.
But Gachagua, in a subsequent statement, dismissed the government's efforts, accusing the state of being behind sections of the goons.
He went on, "If police under your command disengage from the state-sponsored militia, within no time, you know Kenyans are peace-loving; they will arrest those goons and bring them back to your stations."
If clips that have been circulating online are anything to go by, police on Sunday appeared to disperse a group of goons, whilst another section appeared to walk freely along a busy road. It remains unclear who the goons in question were affiliated with.
Gachagua, in his statement, accused police of dishonesty in their mandate as he detailed several incidents of chaos which specifically targeted opposition leaders.
Among the incidents flagged by Gachagua was one in April, which saw the former DP's bodyguards fire in the air to disperse hundreds of youths who stormed the PCEA Kasarani East church.
On Monday, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen announced a nationwide crackdown on political goons, terming this growing trend as "unacceptable".
