An autopsy has established that Allan Kamau, a man who died at Kumumuamu Police Station in Migori County, passed away due to hanging.

Addressing the press on Thursday, October 2, Leah Obosy, a pathologist at the Migori Referral Hospital, noted that while the victim died from hanging, it was yet to be established whether the incident was self-inflicted or murder.

The pathologist clarified that it is the role of detectives to establish whether the incident was a suicide or a murder case.

"So we have finished the postmortem on the body of Allan. We found that he died from hanging. So the police are going to conduct the investigations to determine whether it was self-inflicted or a homicide," said Obosy.

While commenting on the outcome of the postmortem, Allan's father, Geoffrey Kamau, called on the government to intervene and establish what caused his son's death.

"We do not know whether he committed suicide or how he could have done that in a police cell. We urge the government to help us know the truth regarding the death of my son," Allan's father demanded.

According to the deceased's mother, Mary Wambui, the late Allan was arrested on Thursday, September 28, 2025 and taken to Kumumuamu Police Station in Kuria West sub-county.

Kamau was reportedly apprehended after his aunt accused him of allegedly trespassing and cutting down trees on her farm without her permission.

Allan's mother narrated how the deceased's aunt sought compensation for the alleged destruction, but because Wambui could not immediately raise the money, her son was detained for more days.

"My son pleaded with his aunt and apologised. But all she wanted was payment for the trees my son had cut. Unfortunately, I had no money, and my son remained in police custody," said Allan's mother.

Wambui allegedly received a phone call from an officer at Kumumuamu Police Station, who identified himself as just a corporal and even heard her son's voice in the background pleading for her to save him.

The victim's mother alleged that the same corporal called again around 4 pm on the same day, demanding a Ksh15,000 ransom for Kamau’s release, threatening that things would get worse if she did not send the money.

However, after several hours, Wambui received another call from the station informing her that her son had died.
