A Catholic nun who is the prime suspect in the murder of fellow nun Anselimina Karimi, is set to remain in police custody for the next 14 days.
In a ruling issued on Tuesday, October 14, the nun's detainment is to allow police to conduct investigations as they aim to get to the bottom of the alleged brutal murder of Sister Karimi.
The suspect was arraigned in the Meru Law Courts on Tuesday afternoon, with her lawyer aiming to secure her release on bail, while the prosecution contended that she should be detained, deeming her a flight risk.
Sister Karimi is said to have been murdered on Saturday October 11, but her body was discovered at her house the following day.
Before her demise, Sister Karimi had been the administrator of a children's located on the outskirts of Meru town.
Her death coincided with the suspect’s transfer to the facility, where she was set to take over from Sister Karimi.
According to unconfirmed reports, Sister Karimi may have been murdered elsewhere and the body brought to her house.
While the exact cause of her death is yet to be established, preliminary reports suggested that she might have succumbed to head injuries, most likely sustained after being hit by a blunt object.
According to the police, forensic investigations showed that the late Sister Karimi was at her house until 10pm on Saturday. Further investigations have established that her phone was switched off around 11pm and is yet to be found.
According to the police, the suspect, after finding the deceased lying down, called her colleagues and requested that they rush her to Consolata Mission Hospital Nkubu, some 16 kilometres away.
Among the key issues detectives are seeking to unravel is the suspect's phone data to identify her location and communication patterns during the fateful hour.
