Police IG Douglas Kanja’s Father Weston Kirocho Dies Aged 85

The Inspector General of Police, Douglas Kanja, is mourning the death of his father, Mzee Weston Kirocho Kanja.

Although he passed away on Tuesday, October 14, news of the late Kanja’s death only emerged on Monday, October 20, and the cause of his death remains unknown.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) revealed Mzee Kanja’s death in a social media post in which the Director of Criminal Investigations, Mohammed Amin, could be seen signing a condolence book at IG Kanja’s home.

In the post, Amin expressed his condolences on behalf of the DCI, describing Mzee's death as a difficult time and assuring IG Kanja of the DCI's support as he mourns his father.

“This evening, the Director of Criminal Investigations, Mr. Mohamed Amin, visited the Inspector General of the National Police Service, Mr. Douglas Kanja, MGH, CBS, OGW, to offer his condolences following the passing of his father, Mzee Weston Kirocho Kanja, on October 14, 2025,” noted the DCI.

Adding: “The Director, together with the entire DCI fraternity, extends heartfelt condolences and stands in solidarity with the Inspector General and his family during this difficult time. We are united in mourning their loss and offer our deepest sympathies as they navigate this challenging period.”

Mzee Kanja is set to be buried on Thursday, October 23, at the family home in Thome Village, Matanya Sub-Location, Tigithi Location, in Laikipia County.

Mzee's children include Millicent Gathigia, Grace Mumbi, Alice Hiuko, Jane Wanjira, Naomi Wanjiru, Racheal Nyaguthii, Beatrice Wakiuru, Margaret Murugi, George Mathenge, Winfred Muthoni and Charity Wamuyu, as well as IG Kanja.

He was married to Jedidah Wanjiku and Catherine Wanjiku. Mzee, who died aged 85, was the son of Kanja Irimu and Millicent Gathigia, both deceased.

His siblings include the late Douglas Irimu, the late Major Wilson Munene, the late Cecelia Hiuko, the late Veronica Kang’ang’i and the late Piety Beatrice Wakiuru.

Mzee Kanja’s death occurred a day before the death of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, who passed away after suffering a cardiac arrest while seeking treatment in India. 

The former PM's demise grabbed national and international headlines, with IG Kanja among the notable dignitaries present during a viewing held in Parliament Buildings on Thursday.

Raila was buried on Sunday, October 19, at his father's Kang’o ka Jaramogi homestead in Bondo, Siaya County.
