The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has demanded that the National Treasury release Ksh12.6 billion owed to the party under the Political Parties Fund.
According to ODM, the funds have not been disbursed for several years, despite the party qualifying as one of the main beneficiaries under the law.
In a statement released after a Central Committee meeting held on Monday under the leadership of acting party leader Oburu Odinga, ODM stated that the funds should be released immediately as a matter of fairness and in honour of the late Raila Odinga, who championed transparency and accountability in political financing.
“The government has failed to release monies owed to ODM. We are demanding that the funds be released as required by law and in honour of the departed comrade Raila Odinga,” the statement read in part.
The party noted that the delay has undermined its operations across the country and called on the government to respect the Political Parties Act.
Nationwide Memorials
Meanwhile, the party announced plans to hold nationwide memorial events in honour of the late Raila Odinga. The events will be conducted in major towns, giving Kenyans an opportunity to celebrate the life and legacy of the former Prime Minister.
According to ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna, the memorials will kick off in Kilifi County on the 2nd and 3rd of next month before proceeding to Homa Bay and Migori on the 5th and 6th.
“The party will hold various memorial events across the country to enable the party to interact with those he inspired,” Sifuna stated.
ODM at 20 Celebrations
ODM further announced that its 20th anniversary celebrations, themed 'ODM at 20', will take place on the 15th and 16th of next month in Mombasa County and that the event will highlight Raila's contributions to the party and the country’s democratic journey.
Party Leadership and Campaigns
During the meeting, the Central Management Committee endorsed Siaya Senator Oburu Odinga as the interim party leader and urged all ODM members and organs to support him as the party navigates its transition period.
At the same time, the party leadership confirmed plans to embark on a nationwide consolidation drive to strengthen its grassroots structures ahead of the 2027 General Election.
ODM maintained that the unity and values embodied by Raila will remain the foundation upon which the party builds its next phase of leadership.
