Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni has demanded that the Kenyan government compensate Uganda for the deaths of soldiers and experts who were allegedly killed in Kenya.
The demand stems from a March 2022 incident where three geologists and two Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) soldiers were allegedly killed by Turkana warriors.
While speaking during a rally at Kalas Girls Primary School grounds on October 29, he said that such matters will not be ignored and there is a need for mending.
He noted that after the elections in the country, both governments will have a joint ceremony to settle the matter.
He revealed that he will make arrangements to organise a compensation ceremony in Moroto, a district in the Northern Region of Uganda, that would be attended by President William Ruto.
“The Kenyan government will pay for the lives of those killed. After the elections, I will perform a ceremony with President Ruto in Moroto for the Kenyan government to pay."
"They will pay for the lives of our people who died, and the elders will cleanse the blood of the people who died. The bishops and sheikhs will also come in and contribute," he added.
Museveni said that the Kenyan government should issue financial compensation, which would be paid to the families of the five victims.
"The Turkana still have a debt, as they must compensate for the lives of people they killed. I told President Ruto that if these criminals don’t have money, the Kenyan government must pay,” he said.
Moroto Attack in 2022
In March 2022, Turkana warriors reportedly shot dead three geologists from the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development and two UPDF soldiers who were guarding them.
The geologists were on a mineral mapping exercise in Moroto when they were attacked by the warriors, who also took away the two guns owned by the UPDF soldiers.
All five victims were reportedly attacked without warning. The shooting took place in a remote area near the Uganda-Kenya border.
