President William Ruto, on Thursday, November 6, held a phone conversation with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, during which the duo discussed a wide range of bilateral and regional issues.
Among the issues discussed by the two leaders are peace and security in Sudan, Somalia and even the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
Ruto and Merz expressed concerns over the escalation of violence in the three countries, emphasising the need for an immediate intervention to end the conflicts.
During the phone call, the Head of State called on the German government's assistance in ending the violence that has led to deaths and mass displacements.
"I had a telephone conversation with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz earlier today. We noted our strong and enduring cordial relations and agreed to continue strengthening them," Ruto said.
He added, "On peace and security in our region, especially in Somalia, Sudan and Eastern DRC, we emphasised the urgency of ending the conflicts and the role Germany can play in this endeavour."
For instance, in Sudan, a humanitarian crisis has unfolded following the Rapid Support Forces (RSF)'s recent capture of El-Fasher, a city located North of Darfur.
The conflict in El-Fasher has resulted in the death of over 40,000 people, with over 12 million people displaced as RSF continues to expand its territories in an effort to overthrow the current administration.
Similarly, in Eastern DRC, hundreds of people have been killed, while thousands have been displaced as a result of the ongoing war between the DRC army and the Rwandan-led M23 rebels.
Meanwhile, in the phone call, Ruto also thanked the German Government for supporting the expansion of our energy generation efforts with a Ksh6.6 billion facility.
Additionally, the two leaders discussed the implementation of the bilateral labour agreement that the two countries signed, giving more Kenyans opportunities to work in Germany.
Further, Ruto and Merz underscored the growing trade and investment ties between Africa and Europe and agreed that the upcoming European Union-Africa Summit in Luanda, Angola, will be a befitting platform to strengthen our relationship.
