Former Nairobi Governor has stepped in to support a survivor of a gang rape in Laare, Meru days after he announced a Ksh300,000 reward for any information that could lead to the arrest of the gang.

In a statement on Friday, December 6, 2025, Sonko revealed that the woman is now under full medical care and protection.

“We made a promise, and we are keeping it. The woman from Meru who survived a brutal gang rape is now under full medical care, protection, and support,” Sonko said.

Sonko had earlier shared details of the case on his social media platforms expressing outrage over the attack as he urged members of the public to assist authorities in identifying the perpetrators.

The incident happened on December 1, 2025, during a circumcision procession in Laare Town, Igembe North Sub-County.

Police officers from Laare Police Station rushed to the scene after receiving a distress call from members of the public.

They found the woman traumatised, with her clothes torn, before escorting her to Nyambene Hospital for treatment.

The Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI) immediately launched a search to track down those involved. Using forensic intelligence, officers conducted targeted raids in Irinde, Lubwa, and Kiarama, leading to the arrest of six suspects.

The six join three others who were arrested on the day of the attack. All nine suspects are in custody as detectives analyse evidence and prepare for arraignment.

Sonko condemned the assault, saying the fight now goes beyond a single survivor.

“This is about justice, accountability, and sending an unmistakable message… anyone who harms our daughters, sisters, and mothers will face the full force of the law,” said Sonko.

Police say the search for other suspects ongoing as the former county boss vowed to assist in hunting down every perpetrator and stand by the survivor until justice is served.

"We will hunt down every perpetrator. We will stand with the survivor until justice is done. And we will not stop fighting until this violence is ended, once and for all," he added.
