Assistant Inspector General of Police Philip Kipchirchir has died after reportedly collapsing in his house in Chesumei, Nandi County.
Reports indicate that Kipchirchir, who served as a senior officer at the Vigilance House in Nairobi, collapsed around 5 am on Saturday, December 6.
Attempts to rush him to the nearest hospital for treatment proved futile after he was pronounced dead upon arrival.
According to Kipchirchir's brother, he suddenly fell unconscious, prompting family members to rush him to Kapsabet County Referral Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Before his appointment to the rank of an Assistant Inspector General of Police, Kipchirchir had served in several ranks within the service, including in the General Service Unit (GSU).
Following his death, Kipchirchir's body was moved to Samaritan Farewell Home, where it has been preserved pending a post-mortem examination to establish the cause of death.
The deceased was among officers who had previously been removed from the service during vetting by the National Police Service Commission before being reinstated by the court.
While the exact cause of his death is yet to be established, the National Police Service (NPS) has yet to issue a formal statement regarding the matter.
Over the recent years, there has been a surge in cases involving the death of police officers due to various reasons, including accidents, hostile attacks, and suicide.
For instance, in October this year, a GSU officer manning State House Gate D in Nairobi was killed in an attack by a man armed with a bow and arrow.
An autopsy conducted on the body of the officer revealed that he died of excessive bleeding after the arrow pierced through his left lung and punctured his heart.
The suspect was arrested, and during his interrogation, he claimed that he acted under Satan's command. However, his family noted that the victim had been suffering from mental health issues.
