The Kenya Women Parliamentary Association (KEWOPA) has called for swift justice for a woman who was assaulted by a gang of more than six men in Laare, Meru County.
Officers from Laare Police Station later launched a wide search across Irinde, Lubwa, and Kiarama, leading to the arrest of six more suspects linked to the attack.
KEWOPA, in statement on Saturday, December 6, 2025, condemned the incident, describing it as a disturbing violation.
“This crime is a grave violation of her dignity, security and fundamental rights,” KEWOPA's statement read in part.
KEWOPA also stressed that it was especially painful that such an attack had occurred during the 16 Days of Activism against Gender Based Violence, a period dedicated to raising awareness, protecting survivors, and demanding accountability.
The association called for speedy, transparent, and uncompromised justice, insisting that every individual who planned, participated in, or enabled the assault be held accountable.
“We call for swift, transparent and decisive justice for the survivor and for the immediate identification and arrest of all remaining individuals involved,” KEWOPA added.
KEWOPA further emphasized the need to protect the survivor’s privacy and safety throughout the legal process, warning that the system or the community should not retraumatize any woman.
The group said the incident underscores the urgent need for communities to reject harmful cultural actions and safeguard women during public gatherings.
The woman was assaulted on December 1 during a traditional circumcision procession, an incident that has sparked national outrage and renewed calls for accountability.
Police say they responded to a distress call from residents who found the victim in critical condition.
She was rushed to to a local hospital, where she continues to receive medical attention and psychosocial support.
Through its chair Leah Sankaire, the association assured that it would continue monitoring the case as the search for additional suspects intensifies.
