A DCI officer based in Kitale has been killed after being stabbed in an incident in which a gang attempted to rescue a suspect whom detectives were trying to arrest. One youth was also fatally shot in the incident.
Trans Nzoia County Criminal Investigation Officer, Josephat Ndung’u, confirmed the incident and stated that investigations are ongoing to determine the motive and circumstances surrounding the attack.
One suspect has so far been arrested in connection with the incident.
According to reports, the detective was killed in the Matisi area while in the company of colleagues, and they had gone to arrest a murder suspect.
Authorities are working to piece together how the attack unfolded and whether more suspects may be involved in the planning and execution of the incident.
Even so, the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) plays a key role in investigating attacks on police officers, has yet to release a report on the incident.
When such attacks occur, IPOA independently probes the circumstances and examines whether any police negligence or misconduct contributed to the incident.
DCI Officers Attacked
Just last month, three officers from the DCI sustained serious injuries on November 12 following a violent confrontation with armed assailants in Kasipul Constituency, Homa Bay County, during campaigns for the recently concluded byelections.
According to the police, the incident occurred during a security operation to apprehend suspects linked to the killing of two youths in the Opondo area.
Reports indicate that the officers, among them Rachuonyo South Sub-County DCI boss Daniel Muhuhi, were ambushed while attempting to arrest the suspects at the homestead of the late former Kasipul MP, Ong’ondo Were, in Kachien Village.
The officers are said to have met the ordeal while tracing the suspects to Kosele Trading Centre following intelligence reports.
Still, the group fled and sought refuge at the late MP’s homestead, where they launched the attack on the sleuths.
