Pressure continued to pile on the government over the death of former Lugari Member of Parliament Cyrus Jirongo as opposition figures issued a fresh ultimatum on Sunday.

During a farewell service of the former Cabinet Minister in Kitale, DAP-K party leader Eugene Wamalwa was particularly critical of the government's silence over Jirongo's death as he lamented the apparent lack of a comprehensive report on the circumstances leading up to his death.

Jirongo passed away on December 13 after his Mercedes-Benz collided head-on with a bus along the Nairobi-Nakuru highway. An autopsy report has since confirmed that the former lawmaker passed away from severe injuries to the chest.

While speaking during his final farewell service, Wamalwa criticised the government for seemingly steering clear of any association with Jirongo after his death, as he called for the government to break its silence.

"There was no government representative at the mass. Not even the person who pioneered the YK92 with Jirongo," Wamalwa said.

"Up to now, the questions have not been answered. Questions that the United opposition have been asking and have not been answered."

Also present in Kitale to receive Jirongo's body was Nairobi governor Johnson Sakaja, although the county boss did not make any public addresses, instead deciding to briefly answer media questions separately.

With the late Jirongo set to be buried on December 30 at his Lumakanda home, Wamalwa issued a subtle warning to the state to issue a statement on the findings of investigations into the former MP's death.

He went on, "We have brought our brother to Kitale.  There is still no government representative.  We are telling those in government. Before we bury our brother, we will take him to Lugari. Before we bury him, we demand that you clear the air about the circumstances surrounding the death of Cyrus Jirongo. Otherwise, we will ask the elders to take action."

The 'action' Wamalwa was referring to was the use of a torch to be buried alongside Jirongo, as it is believed in some cultures that doing so can eventually expose the real killers of an individual.

Interestingly, former Presidential advisor Moses Kuria had offered to purchase the torch to be used in the 'traditional investigations' a day earlier.

As far as the government's take on Jirongo's death, the one individual who has openly spoken about his passing was National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetan'gula, who explained the final moments with the deceased prior to the accident.

Wetang'ula had explained that on the evening of Jamhuri day, December 12, he met with Jirongo, but the meeting ended early because he had a planned trip the following day.

On Saturday, another opposition figure, People's Liberation Party (PLP) leader Martha Karua, claimed Jirongo had expressed concerns about his safety in the days leading up to his death.
