National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has confirmed that Kwanza Constituency MP Ferdinand Wanyonyi is stable and receiving specialised treatment at KIMS Health Care Management Limited in Kerala, India.
The MP, who has been away from parliamentary duties for the better part of 2025, is under the care of a multidisciplinary medical team led by Indian doctors specialised in physical medicine and rehabilitation, who confirmed that he is responding well to treatment and rehabilitation.
“I visited Hon. Wanyonyi and was encouraged by the progress he has made. I remain optimistic about his recovery,” Wetang’ula said following a visit to the hospital where the lawmaker is currently admitted.
During the visit, Wetang’ula thanked the hospital staff on behalf of Parliament and the people of Kenya, praising their professionalism and dedication to the MP’s care.
Meanwhile, the speaker noted that India, particularly Kerala, has become a preferred destination for Kenyans seeking specialised medical care due to quality services, advanced technology, and relative affordability, systems which he revealed that Kenya will soon adopt.
The Speaker said the visit provided insights for potential collaboration between Kenyan and Indian health institutions, including specialist training, expertise transfer, research, and structured referral systems.
“Upon my return to Nairobi, I will engage relevant parliamentary committees to explore partnerships in specialist training, expertise transfer, research, and structured referral systems to strengthen Kenya’s healthcare capacity.”
On December 5 last year, Wetang’ula, while addressing lawmakers on the floor of the house, was forced to dismiss rumours that Wanyonyi had passed away, calling the claims malicious and insensitive amid a wave of online reports that had alleged that he had passed.
He confirmed that the lawmaker had been admitted at Nairobi based hosipital for about a month before being referred to India for specialised treatment.
The speaker said Wanyonyi has been accompanied by his wife and daughter throughout his treatment, who have been providing constant support and updates on his health.
Wanyonyi is currently serving his third consecutive term as an MP for Kwanza Constituency, having first been elected in 2013 and has been re-elected in 2017 and again in 2022
Before entering politics, Wanyonyi held several senior management positions in Kenya’s public and private sectors. He served as Managing Director at the Lake Basin Development Authority (2005–2007), Deputy Managing Director at Tana & Athi River Development Authority (2003–2005), and worked in the private sector as Exports Sales Manager at Kodak Ltd (1986–1993) and at Bayer (EA) Ltd (1979–1981).
