Uhuru and Raila Skip Presidential Aspirants Meeting

President Uhuru Kenyatta and National Super Alliance (NASA) flag bearer Raila Odinga on Tuesday skipped a crucial meeting organised by the IEBC.

The polls body had invited all the presidential candidates vying in the August 8 General Election in preparation for the upcoming polls.

The meeting was meant to be the first between the IEBC Commissioners and the two political heavyweights at the same time.

Despite earlier expectations that Kenyatta and Odinga would join the other aspirants, they were conspicuously missing and instead sent representatives.

Some of the presidential candidates led by Abduda Dida complained over their absence maintaining that the leaders were supposed to attend the forum in person.

However, IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati defended the two top contenders explaining that they were at liberty to send representatives.

It is allowed in the law. If the candidates are engaged, we have no problem with representatives,” he affirmed.

During the meeting held at the Lilian Towers in Nairobi, Chebukati insisted that the election would still be held on August 8 asking those making contrary statements to respect the law.

The IEBC Chair stated that aspirants would also be required to present a list of independent supporters as required by the law.

He further urged the media to give unbiased coverage to all candidates during their campaigns.
