Mike Sonko Accuses Governor Kidero of Frustrating Sonko Rescue Team

Barely a few weeks after the Sonko Rescue Team was registered as a Non-Governmental Organisation, Nairobi senator Mike Sonko has come out claiming that Nairobi County authorities are frustrating its operations.

He disclosed that during a clean up exercise in Eastleigh on Tuesday, Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero deployed a team from the county offices to arrest the Sonko Rescue Team and impound the trucks.

Through the NGO, Sonko launched operation "Ng'arisha jiji" aiming to clean up all city estates and slums to restore Nairobi's lost glory.

He disclosed that the organization had obtained permission and had all the required documents to conduct the exercise.

The team sent to stop the exercise claimed that Sonko Rescue Team members were collecting and disposing of garbage by the roadside instead of transporting it to the Dandora dump site.

Sonko, however, dismissed the claims stating: "I have evidence including the city-county dumping receipts to prove we adhered to laws relating to collection and dumping of garbage."

"I wish to confirm that my team has been taking collected garbage to the Dandora dump site using our trucks."

Sonko urged Kidero to stop politicising the issue and instead focus on improving the environment and the lives of Nairobi residents.

The allegations come as a political showdown looms between Sonko and Kidero are both seeking the county's top seat in the August elections.
