19-year-old Anwar Athman Shot and Blocked From Getting Medical Treatment By Police Officers in Mombasa County

A 19-year-old man has had a bullet in his neck for three days after Police officers from Kisauni in Mombasa County reportedly shot him and blocked doctors from attending to him.

Anwar Athman who is receiving treatment at the Coast Provincial General Hospital (CPGH) is said to have been shot by officers who were conducting a raid in Maweni area in Mombasa.

"Today (Wednesday) is the third day since the incident happened and police have refused us to bring in any doctor who can remove the bullet from the neck. Police officers have been here manning him as if he is a criminal," Khamis Abdulatif, who is Athman's brother in law stated.

According to Kisauni Police boss Christopher Rotich, Mr Athman was shot after attacking a resident.

“The suspect was with other eight accomplices who attacked a resident who lodged a complaint and police responded. We have our officers at the hospital to guard the suspect and when he recuperates we are going to take him to court,” said Mr Rotich.

His family, however, argued that Athman was just a bodaboda rider and that the police officers were accusing him falsely.

Mr Abdulatif reported the matter to Haki Africa, a local Non-Governmental Organisation, where the Programme Officer Francis Auma promised to help the family get justice.

Mr Auma accused police officers of using excessive force on suspected juvenile criminal gangs.
