Kenya Requests Sh36 Billion Grant from Global Fund

The Kenyan government has made a funding request to Global Fund seeking Ksh36 Billion.

Reports indicate that the funding request was submitted on May 23 by the Kenya Coordinating Mechanism.

The funds, if approved, will give the government the much-needed boost coming at a time when the current national debt is a staggering 4.3 Trillion shillings.

The funds are a grant, meaning that Kenya will not be expected to pay back the funds and this could offer some relief to Kenyans in the face of rising national debt.

Funds from the Global Fund are expected to support Tuberculosis, Malaria, HIV programs and other health interventions and resilience programs between 2018 and 2020.

Part of the funds would also be used to purchase life-saving medicines for HIV, TB and other essential supplies.

The public health sector is currently facing a funding challenge after the United States government, through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) suspended funding for critical programs in the Ministry of Health.

Other than the national revenue, the government relies heavily on borrowing and grants from international agencies to fund most of its programs.
