Citizen reports reaching newsrooms have indicated that there is a new breed of carjackers who operate along the main highway roads within the country, particularly Mombasa Road, Uhuru Highway and Waiyaki Way.
The criminal group's method of operation entails waiting for their targets on the footbridges that are erected at various points along the highway.
The waylayers, armed with a huge rock, ascend the footbridge and await a motorist to pass under it.
Perfect timing then sees the assailants drop the rock on the windscreen of the passing car wrecking it severely.
The unsuspecting driver who parks his car to assess the damage is then attacked and they make away with the car.
One such incident was reported near Athi River along Mombasa Road last week where the driver was shot and robbed in the cover of night.
Other footbridges that have been blacklisted include the Lusaka Road roundabout and one at the General Motors (GM) terminus still along Mombasa Road.
Law enforcement officers suspect that this is a new method of operating that the criminals are using in the outskirts of Nairobi as stringent security measures have curtalied their efforts within the city.
Social media users have shared a video of a driver experiencing the attack, have a look.
