Four agents of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) were robbed of their phones and an IEBC power bank by two gunmen in Kariobangi area in Nairobi County.
Meline Onundo, Ivor Mengo, Hannah Wanja and Elvis Ngure, who are voter verification agents, were conducting the exercise at Nairobi River Primary School when two men pretending to be voters seeking verification of their registration details attacked them.
The attackers drew the guns and threatened the three agents into giving them their possessions.
"It was a regular robbery, the thugs wanted money and valuables. They only stole phones and a handbag from a woman. That cannot stop the exercise," Buruburu Police Commander Geoffrey Mayek stated.
Mr Mayek added that the exercise would go on as laptops and BVR kits were not stolen or tampered with.
No arrests were made, however, the Police Commander revealed that they had asked Safaricom to send notifications when other SIM cards are used on the stolen phones.
The voter verification exercise, which began on May 11, will run for 30 days up to June 9.
IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati stated that the exercise would enable registered voters to confirm details like their name, polling station and identification.
He added that after the exercise the voter register would be revised and any changes taken into consideration.
